Fair-share contributions to near-term mitigation investment

Regional cost-effective investment needs for 2020–2030 come from IPCC AR6 WGIII (Technical Summary, Figure TS.25). The tool redistributes the global total across the ten WGIII regions using your weighting of responsibility, capability and need, and shows the within-region and inter-regional contributions that result. Method and data: Pachauri et al. (2022), Science.

Regional investment needs and 'fair-share' contributions, 2020–2030

Billion USD (PPP 2015) per year. Stacked bars split each region's fair-share contribution into within-region spending and inter-regional transfers; markers show AR6 cost-effective needs; the narrow grey bar shows recent average within-region investment.

Table

The same, as a share of regional GDP (2019)

Annual contributions divided by 2019 regional GDP (USD PPP 2017). Same colour coding as the first tab.

Table

Within-region and inter-regional flows

Annual contributions (billion USD PPP 2015) needed to align regional cost-effective needs with fair-share contributions. Regions on the left pay into within-region needs or an inter-regional fund; the fund pays out to regions whose needs exceed their fair share.

Selected indicators in original units

One panel per selected indicator. Greyed panels carry zero weight.

Corresponding indicator allocations

Each indicator transformed into a regional share of global investment needs (see paper SI for the transformation).

Weighted aggregate allocation

The weighted combination of the three indicator allocations — the shares that drive every other view.
