The Fair Mitigation Finance Explorer is the webapp that accompanies our Science paper on fairness in global mitigation investments (Pachauri, Pelz et al., 2022). The paper's argument is that least-cost abatement tells you where mitigation should happen, not who should pay for it; the tool lets users work through the second question themselves rather than take our indicator choices on trust.

Users choose one indicator for each of three equity considerations and weight them: responsibility (cumulative CO2 from fossil fuels and industry since 1850 or since 1990), capability (per-capita GDP or per-capita capital stock in 2019), and need (multidimensional deprivation in decent living standards, or acute multi-sector climate risk in 2030). The weights are normalised, and the resulting fair-share allocation is applied to the regional cost-effective investment needs for 2020 to 2030 from Figure TS.25 of the IPCC AR6 WGIII Technical Summary, at either the lower or upper bound. Where a region's fair-share contribution exceeds its own need, the difference is an inter-regional outflow; where it falls short, the gap is met by inflows. The dashboard shows both the allocation and the transfers it implies across the ten IPCC regions.

Built in 2022 as an R Shiny app on shinyapps.io, it has since been rebuilt as a static site with the same data and arithmetic. It is preserved as a legacy tool alongside the replication archive rather than actively extended.
